How Does Mobile Detailing Work?

A step-by-step look at what happens when a mobile detailer comes to you — from booking to the finished car — and how to get your space ready.

Part of the guideWhat Is Mobile Detailing?

When you book a mobile detail, the detailer comes to your home or workplace with everything needed and completes the full job on site. From your side it's simple: pick a time, point them to the car, and come back to a finished vehicle. Here's what actually happens at each step.

Step 1: Booking and the quote

You book online or by phone and describe your vehicle and what you want done. A good detailer asks about the car's size and condition so the quote is accurate and the right amount of time is set aside. You'll get a price and an arrival window.

Step 2: Arrival and setup

The detailer arrives with a fully equipped vehicle — water, power, professional tools, and products. They'll find a spot with room to work around the car, connect to your outdoor outlet and water spigot, and set up. If water or power isn't available, many mobile setups carry their own.

Step 3: The detail

The work proceeds just like a shop detail:

  • Exterior: safe hand wash, decontamination, paint correction if booked, then protection.
  • Interior: vacuuming, shampooing or steam cleaning, leather conditioning, glass, and trim.
  • Specialty: ceramic coating, tint, or PPF if part of the job.

You don't need to hover — once setup is done, you're free to carry on with your day.

Step 4: Walkaround

When the work is finished, the detailer walks you around the car so you can see the result and ask anything. With a coating or other protection applied, they'll explain any aftercare — like waiting before the first wash.

Getting your space ready

You can make the visit smooth with a few small things:

  • Clear a parking spot with room to walk all the way around the car
  • Make sure an outdoor outlet and water spigot are accessible
  • Remove personal items from the interior beforehand

That's it. The whole point of mobile detailing is that the hard part is ours — you just enjoy the finished car. Curious whether it's the right choice for you? See is mobile detailing worth it.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a mobile detail take?

A maintenance detail runs one to two hours; a full interior-and-exterior detail typically takes three to six hours depending on the vehicle's size and condition. We give you a realistic time window when you book so you can plan your day.

Do I need to be home the whole time?

No. You need to be there to let us in and confirm the details, but once we're set up you're free to go about your day. Many customers leave for work and come back to a finished car.

What happens if it rains?

We keep an eye on the forecast and will reach out to reschedule if the weather won't allow a quality job. Some work can be done under cover, but exterior detailing needs reasonable conditions to be done right.
